Piškotki so datoteke, ki se ob obisku spletnega mesta namestijo na uporabnikovo napravo, s katero je uporabnik dostopal do spletnega mesta. Ob ponovnem obisku spletnega mesta se podatki, zbrani in pridobljeni s pomočjo piškotka ob prejšnjem obisku, lahko preberejo.
Piškotki na spletnem mestu ne omogočajo identifikacije posameznika in z njimi ni mogoče ugotoviti, za katerega konkretnega uporabnika (ime in priimek ali drugi osebni podatki) gre.
S pomočjo piškotkov ponudnik pridobi informacije o načinu uporabe spletnega mesta, predvsem o pogostosti obiskovanja spletnega mesta, o najbolj branih vsebinah, o povprečnem času obiska ipd. (spletna analitika).
